Application Center - General Surgery Residency at St. Joseph Hospital

This five-year residency program will be an opportunity to improve our community’s access to care while cultivating the next generation of talented surgeons. During this robust program, residents will work closely with attending surgeons, gaining early and progressively more advanced operative exposure throughout the residency experience.

  • The residency programs at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health – Tacoma are small and highly competitive. We will offer the following positions for the 2024-25 academic year: The submission deadline for PGY1 positions for this program is Jan. 15, 2024.

    Virginia Mason participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) where applicable.

  • St. Joseph Medical Center General Surgery Residency Program is a five-year program and is accepting two categorical first-year residents.

    General surgery program applicant requirements

    Only applicants participating in the ERAS Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) will be considered. Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications to be eligible for a position in graduate medical education at St. Joseph Medical Center's General Surgery Residency Program:

    1. Graduates of medical school in the United States accredited by ACGME and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
    2. Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

    Resident selection

    Eligible applicants will be interviewed and selected based upon the established policies/procedures of individual programs. Residents may be evaluated and considered for possible appointment based on their:

    1. Academic credentials
    2. Demonstrated ability
    3. Overall preparedness
    4. Communication skills
    5. Aptitude
    6. Motivation
    7. Integrity and
    8. Other written criteria developed by the Program Director which do not violate the St. Joseph Medical Center policy regarding Non-Discrimination.

    If you are a fourth-year medical student and you are interested in General Surgery as a career path, our department at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma is accepting 2-week, sub-internship rotations on a limited case-by-case basis. We will accept applications through VSLO.
