Pelvic Floor Therapy

If you’re experiencing symptoms of a pelvic floor problem, such as incontinence, pelvic pain, or pain during intercourse, there are effective, nonsurgical treatments that can help.

Conditions and techniques

Pelvic therapy uses physical therapy techniques to strengthen pelvic muscles and relieve symptoms. Common conditions treated with physical therapy include:

  • Urinary stress and/or urge incontinence
  • Urinary frequency/urgency
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Constipation
  • Sacroiliac dysfunction
  • General or pregnancy-related low back pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Painful intercourse
  • Vaginismus (vaginal muscle spasms)
  • Male urinary incontinence after prostatectomy
  • Pre-prostate surgery

A few of our treatment techniques include:

  • Joint mobilization, therapeutic exercise, ultrasound and electrical stimulation
  • Manual soft tissue work/stretching
  • Bladder training and education about steps you can take at home
  • Pelvic floor muscle up/down training with use of internal or external biofeedback sensors for relaxation, coordination training, or strengthening
  • Home exercise program
  • Behavioral and rehabilitation techniques for bowel/bladder elimination disorders
