If you notice stroke symptoms, BE FAST

Receiving prompt emergency care at the first signs of stroke can improve the chances of survival and reduced disability. Use the acronym “BE FAST” to recognize the sudden signs of stroke and take action:

  • B – Balance: Is the person having trouble with balance or coordination?
  • E – Eyes: Is there blurry or double vision or loss of vision in one or both eyes?
  • F – Face drooping: Does one side of the face droop or feel numb? Check by asking the person to smile.
  • A – Arm weakness: Is one arm weak? When arms are lifted, does one drift downward?
  • S – Speech difficulty: Is the person’s speech slurred or hard to understand?
  • T – Terrible headache: Is the person suddenly experiencing the worst headache of their life?

Time to call 911: If you observe any of these symptoms, call 911. Do not drive to the hospital.

Stroke evaluation

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health has some of the quickest door-to-treatment times in Washington State.

Our health system is among only a few in the Puget Sound to perform advanced neuroimaging studies. Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle offers CT perfusion, a sophisticated method of evaluating blood flow to the brain. Perfusion-based imaging uses artificial intelligence to detect blockages and immediately notify additional specialists in real time. In addition, some locations have CT and MRI scanners in the emergency department that are available to stroke patients with no wait.

Stroke neurologists, neuroradiologists, neurovascular surgeons and other specialists are available at all hours to quickly establish a care plan and deliver lifesaving therapies.

Ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke treatment

Comprehensive stroke treatment at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health starts with emergency care to restore blood flow to the brain (ischemic stroke) or stop brain bleeds (hemorrhagic stroke). Specialized inpatient and outpatient services help you recover and lower the risk of future stroke. We are with you every step of the way.

  • The therapies that are right for your needs depend on the stroke type:

    • Ischemic stroke: We deliver clot-busting medication through a vein in your arm if arriving to the emergency department soon after symptom onset. You may also need a procedure called mechanical thrombectomy to remove a clot. We offer additional neurovascular procedures (if necessary), as well.
    • Hemorrhagic stroke: This stroke type may require an open neurosurgery procedure to stop the brain bleed. You may also benefit from minimally invasive neurovascular procedures.
  • Patients recovering from a severe stroke often stay in our state-of-the-art neuro-intensive care units. Nurses with additional training in the unique needs of stroke survivors provide around-the-clock monitoring. Neurohospitalists (hospital-based providers specializing in stroke) check on you throughout your stay to optimize care.

Most locations have inpatient stroke units where patients in stable condition start their recovery. Stroke-certified nurses provide attentive care, including medications and other therapies to lower your risk of complications. Before discharge, we discuss the next steps of your care and answer questions to ensure your recovery stays on track.

  • Specialized therapies help you relearn skills lost due to stroke. You may need assistance communicating, moving or performing daily tasks. Rehabilitation starts at the bedside during your hospital stay. Every day, physical, occupational and speech therapists specializing in neurorehabilitation assess your needs and establish a treatment plan.

After your inpatient hospital stay, rehabilitation may continue:

At home: You may also receive skilled nursing and therapies at home through Virginia Mason Franciscan Health’s home health services.

  • Stroke survivors face a higher likelihood of a future stroke, even after their hospital stay. Neurologists see you in outpatient clinics and develop a personalized prevention plan. Explore stroke follow-up and prevention.
