Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Pilot Physicals

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health has been a health care leader in the Seattle area for more than 100 years. Elevating the quality of health care in our community is our passion. We are excited to expand our services to the aerospace community by providing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pilot examinations for 1st, 2nd and 3rd class certifications. 

Our clinic is located in the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine at 925 Seneca Street, Seattle, WA 98101.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. Registration occurs at the main lobby at 925 Seneca Street. Our department is located through the sliding glass doors leading to hyperbaric and pulmonary medicine. 

Our services

  • 1st Class Aviation Medical Examination Certifications
  • 2nd Class Aviation Medical Examination Certifications  
  • 3rd Class Aviation Medical Examination Certifications  
  • CACI (Conditions the AME can Issue), such as hypertension, hypothyroidism, asthma, migraine, etc. 
  • Urinalysis is part of every examination
  • EKG testing is available if neded for your examination

Note: We do NOT provide Human Intervention Motivational Study (HIMS) examinations. 

Additional services available at Virginia Mason Medical Center (VMMC)

If you are in need of a primary physician or specialty care as part of your routine health examinations, the following departments are available at VMMC:

  • Audiometry (formal testing)
  • Cardiology
  • Ear, nose and throat
  • Gynecology
  • Nephrology
  • Neurology
  • Primary care/internal medicine
  • Pulmonology
  • Urology

A referral for these services can be made by your primary physician prior to your appointment, or by the AME following your examination, if necessary. 

Scheduling your appointment

All pilots must fill out the application at FAA MedXPress and obtain a confirmation number. Print a copy of the form and bring it with you to your examination.

Please call the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine at 206-583-6543 during business hours (Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m. PT). If you call after hours, or we are unable to pick up, you may leave a message, and we will call you back. 

After your appointment is scheduled, you will be redirected to our financial navigator team to pre-pay for your examination and selected labs/studies. 

Please provide the following information: 

  • Name (first and last)
  • Contact information (email address, telephone number)
  • Date of birth
  • Examination you require (1st Class, 2nd Class, 3rd Class)
  • 1st time with our department or prior patient
  • Additional tests you require, e.g., EKG
  • CACI documents (required annually). Notes or labs from your treating physician must be current (within the last 90-days). 
    • Conditions AMEs Can Issue (CACI). Please review the CACI worksheet pertaining to your condition and ensure that you provide all necessary documents, and that they are current (within 90-days of this examination). If you require a specialist consultation prior to your Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) examination, please let us know, and bring all associated documents with you to your AME examination. 

Meet Dr. Nicholas Bird

Dr. Nicholas Bird has been in practice for over 20 years. He is a former US Air Force flight surgeon, decorated Iraq War veteran and Senior FAA Medical Examiner. He is board certified in family medicine and undersea and hyperbaric medicine, with extensive experience in occupational health. He has worked with military, commercial and private pilots and is dedicated to keeping pilots mission ready and mission qualified. He applies this same approach to the multiple commercial, scientific and recreational diver groups that seek his expertise.
