Virginia Mason is a premier teaching hospital that offers postgraduate education programs through our Graduate Medical Education Department (GME).

All GME postgraduate training programs are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

  • The following residency training programs offered by Virginia Mason are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

    The residency programs at Virginia Mason are small and highly competitive. Our interview season begins Mid-November, with invites being sent out by Nov. 17. Our last wave of invites will be sent out, at latest, by Jan. 31.

    Virginia Mason participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) where applicable.

    Information for all medical school graduates

    Virginia Mason only accepts application materials through the AAMC's ERAS program.

    All applicants must be candidates for an MD or DO degree from an accredited school of medicine or college of osteopathic medicine upon application.

    Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is REQUIRED prior to the start of our resident training programs. Make sure you sign up for an ACLS certification course during your fourth year. Check with your Dean’s office regarding ACLS training information.

    ALL applicants must submit the Required MyERAS Application materials:

    • Completed ERAS Application form
    • Personal Statement
    • Medical School Transcripts
    • Dean’s Letter (MSPE)
    • Minimum of three (3) letters of recommendation on official letterhead, preferably from your core rotation department heads or preceptors 
    • USMLE Transcripts I and II preferred. Applicants who have previously failed any attempts at the USMLE step I and/or II will most likely be removed from further consideration.

    We review ALL application documents to make our applicant selection. Applicants are selected based on their academic credentials, preparedness, aptitudes, abilities and communication skills, as well as personal qualities, such as motivation and integrity. Virginia Mason resident training programs do not discriminate with regard to gender, race, age, sexual orientation, religious preference, color, national origin, disability or veteran status.

    Our interview season begins in mid-November and extends through December. Applicants who are not selected for interviews will receive a letter of regret.

    Information for international medical school graduates

    Graduates of international medical schools applying for internship or residency, must submit the above required application documents and must have applied for, or hold a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to be considered for an interview.

    Applicants who are not U.S. citizens must meet the current requirements for an appropriate U.S visa* as specified by the United States government.

    *Virginia Mason Graduate Medical Education considers J1 Visa or permanent resident status.

  • Virginia Mason offers the following positions each year:

    • One advanced position (four years after internship from PGY2 to PGY5)
    • Two categorical positions (five years, including internship, from PGY1 to PGY5). The PGY1 year is spent as a Transitional Year resident at Virginia Mason and includes a radiology rotation.

    Our training program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the Radiology Residency Review Committee. All application materials must be forwarded to us through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Once this process has been completed, your application will be reviewed.

  • VMMC House Staff Benefits Summary

    Benefit and salary rates are designed specifically for residents and fellows to support your educational experience. Each year, advancement to the next PGY level results in progression on the salary scale. Information provided here reflects current packages and details are expected to be updated prior to the upcoming academic year.

    Meals:

    Meal stipend is provided to each resident for purchase while on service (amount is determined annually).

    Parking

    Parking for all members of the house staff is provided by the medical center while on service.

    Uniforms

    White coats and scrubs are provided for all members of the resident staff.

    Professional Development and Scholarly Work

    Residents are eligible for financial assistance to attend medical meetings. To be eligible to receive financial assistance, the following criteria apply:

    • Residents presenting scholarly work at professional meetings within the continental United States will be reimbursed for travel expenses for two days, consistent with that allowed by the medical center, for at least one presentation per topic per year.
    • Residents will be eligible to attend medical meetings without presenting a paper and be reimbursed at a rate of $1,000 per year of residency starting in the R1 year.

    State Licensure and DEA Certification

    The medical center pays the initial limited licensure fee in the state of Washington. Two years of postgraduate training are required for permanent licensure in the state of Washington. DEA certification is also reimbursed by Virginia Mason.

    Photocopying

    Photocopying of material for educational purposes of the housestaff will be provided by the medical center.

  • All Virginia Mason Medical Center interviewing activities will occur "virtually" in 2024. Applicants invited for an interview will be provided additional materials and Zoom links, along with instructions for scheduling best dates to interview—through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS).
