Childbirth Family Education and Resources

At Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, maternity care focuses on you, the delivering mom. We take extra steps to ensure you have what you need for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Your peace of mind and overall well-being matter to us, which is why we provide childbirth family education and resources.

Birthing and family education classes

We have been delivering quality family education for more than 30 years. Family education is available in-person and online, making it easier to fit into your busy schedule. Certified childbirth educators lead birthing classes and courses on a variety of topics to help you welcome your baby.

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)

WIC is a federally funded program that provides supplemental nutrition and support to low-income pregnant women and families. Almost half of all babies in Washington state are on WIC.

WIC benefits may include: 

  • Access to community resources for health and nutrition
  • Health and nutrition education, including dietitian consultations for eligible participants
  • Prenatal and breastfeeding support
  • Preventive health care and referrals
  • Nutritious food and WIC-approved infant formula 
  • Vouchers for fruits and vegetables from local farmers during the summer months

If you’re pregnant or have a child under age 5, your family may be eligible for WIC. Recipients typically are working families on a tight budget, unemployment or other forms of public assistance.

Step by Step

In collaboration with Step By Step, a local community agency, we help women in need during pregnancy and the weeks following childbirth. Step by Step helps at-risk pregnant women deliver healthy babies, embrace their roles as parents, and secure promising futures.  

Resources available through Step By Step include:

  • Counseling
  • Education on family planning, nutrition, and more
  • Financial assistance
  • Housing
  • Referrals for community resources
