Oculofacial Plastics

Oculofacial plastics—or oculoplastics—is plastic and reconstructive surgery of the upper face, including eyelids, tear ducts, eye socket and facial rejuvenation procedures. It is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that deals with functional as well as cosmetic problems of the structures surrounding the eye.

Some examples of conditions treated include:

    • Ptosis repair (droopy eyelids)—Surgery for ptosis can be done to improve the appearance of the eyelids in milder cases. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct interference with vision.
    • Belpharoplasty—Blepharoplasty is used to correct "puffy bags" below the eyes and drooping upper lids that make the patient look older and tired or that interferes with vision.
    • Ectropion—Ectropion is a condition in which the eyelids are loose and hang away from the eye. It can be repaired surgically by tightening the muscles that hold the eyelids in place.
    • Entropion—Entropion is a problem where the eyelids roll inward causing irritation to the eyes. It can be repaired surgically to correct the position of the eyelids.
    • Eyelid retraction—Eyelid retraction occurs when the eyelids are pulled back, exposing too much white of the eye. This can result in irritation. It can be repaired surgically to correct the eyelid position.
    • Thyroid eye disease—Thyroid disease can affect the tissues around the eyes causing retraction of the eyelids, bulging of the eyes, double vision, pain and irritation. It can be treated medically to relieve active inflammation. Reconstructive surgery may be performed to fix the changes caused by the disease.
    • Orbital tumors—Masses can develop behind the eyes which cause bulging. This can be treated surgically with removal.
    • Facial trauma—Trauma to the face can result in broken bones around the eyes. These fractures are repaired surgically.
    • Lacrimal surgery—The tear drainage system can become blocked causing excessive tearing. This problem can be repaired surgically to open the tear drain.
    • Botox—Botox can be used to treat both cosmetic and functional problems. It is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes and brows. It is also used to treat spasms of muscles of the face caused by various conditions.
    • Restylane—Restylane smooths away moderate to severe facial wrinkles, like your "smile lines" - the lines from your nose to the corner of your mouth.
    • Juvederm—Juvederm is a cosmetic dermal fillers that replace lost volume and restore youthful contours to the skin to smooth away moderate to severe facial wrinkles, such as "smile lines" - the lines from your nose to the corner of your mouth.
    • Blepharoplasty—Blepharoplasty is used to correct "puffy bags" below the eyes and drooping upper lids that make the patient look older and tired or that interferes with vision.
    • Browlift—A brow lift, also called a forehead lift, is a procedure that can smooth a wrinkled forehead and raise depressed brows.
    • Midface lift—Drooping of the cheeks can be repaired surgically. This can improve both the appearance of the midface and/or the function of the lower eyelids by reducing their sagging.
