The pharmacy residency program at Virginia Mason Medical Center, an integrated health care system, is an accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Pharmacists completing this residency will be competent and confident practitioners in multiple health care environments and across the continuum of patient-centered care in an integrated health-system. Program graduates will be prepared to enter clinical practice. These pharmacists will exercise skill in educating other health care professionals and patients on medication related topics. The residents will develop their presentation and preceptor skills. As practicing pharmacists, they will demonstrate maturity by following a personal philosophy of practice, monitoring their own performance, and exhibiting commitment to the profession. Our residents will learn how to deliver patient-centered care that is founded in evidence-based medicine. Our residents will learn how to evaluate and improve patient care processes to provide the highest quality, safest care.
“As the PGY1 Residency Director, my goal is for each resident to finish their residency feeling accomplished and confident as a clinician. We want our residents to be able to work in a variety of settings, knowing they have a strong foundation and an ability to be flexible and adaptable as our health care system evolves.”
