Vein Treatment Services

Pain in your legs and other venous disease symptoms can be difficult to ignore. You may have discomfort after walking short distances or slow-healing sores that raise the risk of amputation. Vein treatment services at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health can help you get relief. We excel in treating common and complex conditions, so you receive the services you need close to home.

Vein Treatment Services at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health: Why choose us?

Our vein specialists deliver advanced treatments you might not expect to find outside of large academic medical centers. We understand your needs and develop personalized therapies that optimize your vein health. Meet our team.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Broad range of therapies: Offerings include limb preservation surgery that restores blood flow to your arms or legs. Our vein specialists also perform outpatient procedures that relieve nagging symptoms.
  • Conservative approach: Many people feel better with medical therapies and support for lifestyle changes, like exercise programs. If those treatments aren’t successful, you may benefit from a minimally invasive procedure. For varicose veins, we may apply heat or chemicals to damaged blood vessels instead of surgically removing them.
  • Expertise in rare venous disorders: Our team successfully treats uncommon diagnoses like May-Thurner and nutcracker syndromes. These conditions, which cause pelvic pain and kidney issues, require sophisticated care. Our vein specialists detect and treat them in earlier stages using the latest research-based methods.

Venous diseases we treat

We diagnose and treat many venous conditions, including:

  • Chronic venous insufficiency: Blood pools in the legs, damaging vein walls and increasing pressure in your veins.
  • Deep vein thrombosis: Blood clots develop in the legs, blocking blood flow.
  • May-Thurner syndrome: An artery in your pelvis presses on the vein that returns blood from the left leg to the heart. This compression decreases blood flow and can cause leg pain.
  • Nutcracker syndrome: Blood vessels compress a vein carrying blood from the left kidney. The condition can cause blood in the urine and flank pain.
  • Pelvic congestion syndrome: Pelvic veins can become enlarged, and tortuous (similar to varicose vein) and cause chronic pelvic pain or, in men, varicoceles.
  • Varicose veins: These swollen, twisted veins typically occur in the legs, causing them to ache and feel heavy.

Our venous disease services

Our vein treatment services include detailed assessments and advanced therapies when necessary.

  • Our vein specialists perform a thorough evaluation, leading to an accurate diagnosis. We may recommend vascular testing with ultrasound in our nationally recognized lab to learn more about your symptoms.

We review findings and perform a physical exam before providing personalized treatment recommendations. We explain treatment options, risks, and benefits to help you decide how to proceed.

  • You may benefit from a procedure if medical therapies are unsuccessful or you have severe venous disease.

    Offerings include:

    • Stenting: We insert a hollow mesh device (stent) in a narrowed vein to improve blood flow.
    • Endovenous ablation: This varicose vein treatment uses heat or chemicals to seal off damaged vessels.
    • Thrombectomy: Surgeons remove a blood clot from your veins and repair any vessel damage.
    • Thrombolysis: We inject clot-busting medications in areas of concern to relieve DVT.
