Spasticity Treatment

The Spasticity Management Clinic at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health is a one-stop shop that provides comprehensive care and evaluation for patients with a variety of neurological disorders.

Neurology patients often experience spasticity, a condition in which muscles stiffen or tighten, preventing normal movement. Spasticity management may include treatment of bowel and bladder disorders, wounds, musculoskeletal issues, mood, sleep, pain, or functional deficits in movement that hinder gait and activities of daily living.

The clinic manages care for patients with:

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Brain and spinal cord injuries
  • Adult cerebral palsy
  • Neurodegenerative conditions
  • Functional deficits stemming from central nervous system cancers

Primary care doctors and other clinicians may want assistance from a doctor with specialized training in caring for these patients. The clinic includes physiatrists; neurologists; neuropsychologists; and physical, occupational, and speech therapists.
