Keeping Hearts Healthy

Just like you learn the stats of your favorite players on the field or on the ice, knowing your own heart stats is critical when it comes to your health. Know your stats!

2) Target heart rate for exercise - Know the target heart rate for your age, during moderate intensity activities is about 50-70% of maximum heart rate.

3) Cholesterol levels

  • Your HDL (“good” cholesterol) is the one number you want to be high (ideally above 60)
  • Your LDL (“bad” cholesterol) should be below 100
  • Your total should be below 200

March 16 Youth Heart Screening Event

Do you have a youth athlete in your family? Check out the Seahawks youth heart screening event presented by Virginia Mason Franciscan Health.

Why a Youth EKG Heart Screening is important? Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in exercising young athletes. The best way to detect the types of heart conditions that could potentially cause sudden cardiac arrest, is through a heart screening that includes a comprehensive family health history, electrocardiogram (EKG), and may also include an echocardiogram (ECHO) using testing criteria developed especially for young hearts.

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health’s cardiovascular surgery programs continue to perform at an elite level in the Pacific Northwest and across the nation. Building on the strength of our comprehensive services and the latest state-of-the-art technology, our cardiac surgery outcomes are in the top 10 percent in the nation and U.S. News & World Report ranks us No. 1 in heart and vascular care in Washington, Alaska, Montana, Idaho and Oregon. We’ve also received a top 3-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for isolated CABG, AVR+CABG and MVRR. Virginia Mason Franciscan Health is also nationally recognized by the American Heart Association, receiving the Get with The Guidelines®️ Gold Award for heart failure and Get with the Guidelines®️ Gold Plus Award for stroke care management.
